The Present
After a raucous dinner, Cam stood up and all of his cronies fell silent. I looked up from my hardly-touched food and found him watching me. My cheeks flushed with heat, but I didn’t look away. I wasn’t going to let him embarrass me again.
“Are you ready to let your friends out?” he asked.
Still flabbergasted by his sudden change of attitude, all I could muster was a slight nod.
“Good. After you.”
He gestured to the exit, and I stood up, pushing my chair back from the table. With my chin tilted upward, I made my way back through the room, trying to ignore the fact that every voice fell silent and every eye turned toward me as we passed. I got the feeling that even though the room had been filled with chatter when Cam had announced his decision, everyone now knew about his choice. How would the rest of the rebels react when he finally freed the Seconds? Was I inadvertently putting my friends in danger?
The hallways were empty since everyone was still eating, so we made it to the detention area relatively quickly. The guard, who had been picking at his shoes absentmindedly, sprung to his feet as we approached him.
Cameron ignored the look of guilt on the guard’s face and instead cleared his throat. “Open the door, Trent.”
He obeyed.
My breathing became shallow, but I had no idea why I was so nervous. Shooting a quick look at Cam, I entered into the room, which fell silent as light fell across the floor.
“Jade?” Gideon’s voice spoke. “What’s going on?”
My throat was too dry to talk. If all the rebels hated Seconds so much, then what would happen when they were allowed to roam around freely? Would they be attacked? Is that what Cameron wanted?
My hands started to tremble as I looked at all the pale faces turned in my direction.
Cam cleared his throat again.
“What is he doing here?” Gideon asked.
Cameron laughed and pushed his way into the chamber. “Not very nice, are you?” he said. “Anyway, I’ve come to inform you all that we’ve decided to let you out.”
Incredulous and confused comments bubbled tentatively from every corner of the room. After months of detention, why now? I found Gideon’s eyes, which were full of skepticism as they stared into mine. I couldn’t see his face very well, since the room was still fairly dark, but I could tell his eyebrows were knit together and the “y” was deeply creviced into his forehead.
“However, there are conditions.” Cam’s voice, though calm, still choked the room into a tense hush as they all stopped abruptly to listen to him. “I understand that this group is interested in gaining Knowledge, so I would like to ask you to help us take down the caste system that brands Knowledge as evil.”
There was a small murmur of consent before he continued.
“We have been training for many months now and will soon be ready to make our first move. We thought we had all the manpower we were ever going to get, but we could always use more.
